We had a great group come together at the Hyatt Place to gather some networking tips from our very own Board Vice President, Diana Cardenas aka, the Queen of Networking. There were some great takeaway tips which could be immediately implemented into everyone's networking strategy.
Attendees were greeted with hand passed appetizers during registration/networking time. Once we were seated, we enjoyed a delicious lunch which started with a gourmet salad, followed by an amazing salmon dish (the veggie option was also a home run).
After lunch attendees got to participate in speed networking. This was so much fun to get to know so many people in such a short amount of time and put some of our newly learned networking tips into action. Such a valuable experience.
Meet Lorraine Guevara from the Double Tree, Modesto
How did you get into the industry? Started working with an “off site” catering company in Los Gatos, part time when I was younger, Rathsacks of Los Gatos. Became very good friends with the owner and family and she even introduced me to my husband. (of course I had to get involved with the Sous Chef-my hubby) Edna Rathsack was from Scotland and had a great talent for business, she took me under her wing.
What’d you do in the industry? Currently I am the Corporate Catering Sales Manager at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton, Modesto. I have been with this property for 7 years. It has been a great experience and keeps me busy with over 40,000 square feet of event space. I have worn many hats in this industry at many different venues: from dishwasher, waitress, to director of catering, food and beverage manager. I once thought I wanted to change careers and become a nurse, after a couple years I returned to the hospitality business----IT GETS IN YOUR BLOOD.
What’s new with you? My biggest bragging point this year, is that my kids Amber and AJ will be playing at Carnegie Hall NYC the first week of March with the Enochs High School Wind Ensemble. I am very proud of these kids and excited they have given me an excuse to visit NYC for the first time!
What has been your biggest accomplishment in your career? There have been so many highlights and special events, but the best accomplishment has always been happy clients. When clients feel they have been well taken care of and are thankful, it is the best feeling of accomplishment there is. This is what motivates me.
What has been you biggest challenge? Tough question. The biggest challenge for an event was serving 900 guests a four course beef wellington dinner on tennis courts, in 100 degree weather, short staffed. But of course, the guests thought the event was a great success.
Why do you attend NACE meetings? For the networking and educational opportunities.
